Letter Boxed is a word puzzle inspired by the daily New York Times game. Twelve letters sit on the four sides of a square — three letters per side. You build words by chaining the letters together, using every letter in the puzzle before you finish.

Tap letters to build a word in the input above the board, then press Enter to submit. Every word starts with the previous word's last letter. Two consecutive letters can never come from the same side of the square. The puzzle is solved when every one of the 12 letters has been used at least once.

Three rules. Words must be at least three letters long. No two consecutive letters in a word may share a side of the square. Each new word must start with the last letter of the previous word. There is no limit on the total number of words.

Par is the shortest chain the generator found that uses every letter — usually two words. Beating par takes ingenuity; matching it is the satisfying common case. There is no penalty for going over par.

A filtered subset of the top 10,000 most-common English words from the google-10000-english project (MIT licensed). About 9,400 words; obscure dictionary words are deliberately omitted to keep the puzzle playable. If your favourite word isn't accepted, try a more common synonym.

No. The dictionary excludes proper nouns. Names, places, and brands won't validate. Pluralisations, comparatives, and most regular inflections are present.

Yes. Tap letters around the square to add them to your word, Enter to submit, Backspace to edit. The buttons grow on tablet and desktop but the layout stays the same across screen sizes.

Yes. Letters auto-route to the appropriate side if they're on the board. Enter submits, Backspace edits the pending word, Escape clears it entirely.
