Releases

5.16.1

Easier to say thanks

Highlights

  • Buy me a coffee is easier to find: a small coffee button now sits in the header next to the theme switch, in the menu on phones, and as one quiet line at the end of every game. The footer says what a coffee pays for, and the About page has the button too.

Fixes

  • The Buy me a coffee button no longer disappears for visitors with an ad or tracker blocker. It used to be an image loaded from another site.
  • Back links, the 2048 how-to-play, and the backspace key on the Word Guess, Phrase Guess and Quad Words keyboards now use crisp icons instead of a text arrow.

5.16.0

Lights Out and Tower Defense

Highlights

  • Lights Out is new: every tap flips a light and the four lights touching it, and the goal is to switch the whole board off. Boards come in five sizes from a 3×3 warm-up to a 7×7 expert grid, every one dealt so it can be cleared, with a par worked out exactly for the fewest presses. Undo, Restart and a Hint that rings a light on the shortest way out are there when you need them, solved and perfect boards are counted per size, and a board in progress is saved. It plays full screen and from the keyboard too: arrows move, Enter or Space presses a light
  • Tower Defense is new, from the Request a game ideas: build Archer, Cannon, Frost and Ballista towers beside the road and hold off twenty waves before they reach your gate. Each tower upgrades twice and can aim at the enemy furthest along or the strongest one in reach; Walkers, quick Runners, crowds of Swarmlings and armoured Brutes arrive in turn, with a Warden boss on waves 10, 15 and 20. Easy, Medium and Hard are three maps with their own lives and gold, the game runs at 1× or 2×, and your most waves cleared and wins are kept for each. The artwork is Kenney's free medieval sets. Keyboard players can do everything from the keys: arrows, Enter, 1 to 4 to build, U, S and T

Fixes

  • Full screen no longer zooms the board in and out as you play: selecting a tower in Tower Defense, a growing turn log in Backgammon, a longer status line in Chess, Checkers, Reversi, Sea Battle, Peg Solitaire and other board games, a revealed hint in Emoji Quiz, and each round's keypad in Number Memory all used to resize the stage.
  • Difficulty menus now show each option's full name instead of cutting long ones off.

5.15.0

Pinball, Peg Solitaire, and Chess move grades

Highlights

  • Pinball is new: pull the plunger, work the two flippers with the arrow keys, Z / M, or by holding either side of the table on a phone, and score on three pop bumpers, three top lanes that pay a bonus once all are lit, and the slingshots above the flippers. Quick bumper hits build a combo, and on phones the flipper and Launch pads stay at the bottom of the screen. Easy, Medium and Hard set the balls, the slope and the ball save, and a best score is kept for each
  • Peg Solitaire is new: the classic 33-hole board with seven starting layouts, from a six-peg Cross up to the Full board. Each jump arcs over the peg it takes, Undo steps back, and Hint only ever points at a jump that still leads to a one-peg finish. Solved rounds and centre finishes are counted per layout, and a round in progress is saved. It plays full screen like every other game, and from the keyboard too: arrows move, Enter or Space picks up and jumps, Esc puts a peg down
  • Chess now reviews your moves, as asked for on the Request a game form: each one is graded from Brilliant to Blunder with a badge on the board and in the move list, the line under the board names the best move after a slip, an eval bar beside the board shows who is ahead, and the end card gives your accuracy and a count of each grade. Eval on / off hides all of it if you would rather play unaided

Fixes

  • Fixes Bubble Shooter's board staying blank when you opened full screen.
  • Makes the Ready and Paused screens in Sky Jumper, Sling Monkey and Hop Kingdom easy to read: the text now sits on a solid card instead of straight over clouds, pegs and platforms.
  • Makes the touch controls stand out over the game: Sky Jumper's and Hop Kingdom's arrow pads and Starfall's bomb button have darker backs and a clear outline, so they're easy to see on any background.
  • Chess's Eval on / off switch now works in full screen too.

5.14.0

Full screen for every game

Highlights

  • Adds Full screen to every game. The board fills the screen, with the game's score, time and buttons in a slim bar along the top, and where your browser allows it the page goes properly full screen too, with no tabs or address bar. Press Exit or Esc to come back. Until now only most arcade games, the card games, Arrows Escape and Mahjong had it.
  • Gives the board more room on phones: the card around each board is gone on small screens, so boards, squares and pieces run almost edge to edge.
  • Shows your score, best and the rest of the game's numbers in the arcade games' full screen too.
  • Lets you play Star Battle entirely from the keyboard: Tab into the grid, move with the arrow keys and press Space or Enter to mark the square you're on.
  • Lets you change the difficulty from full screen in Arrows Escape, Backgammon, Checkers, Chess, Color Sequence, Dots and Boxes, Five in a Row (the rules too), Reversi, Sea Battle, Same Color, Unblock, Water Sort and Word Ladder, the suits in Spider Solitaire, and deal again in Mahjong.
  • Renames Floppy Bird to Wingbeat, and its bird now flies between grey stone towers. Your best scores and settings carry over, and old links still open the game.
  • Redraws Hop Kingdom with a cast of its own: a rabbit in an orange tunic, purple beetles to stomp, stone pillars to climb and coin blocks marked with a dot.

Fixes

  • Fixes keys going dead after a click: after you click a button such as Sound, Settings or New game, the arrows, Space and Enter go to the game again. Snake no longer ignores its first arrow, and Space no longer flips Sound back off or deals another new game.
  • Fixes the difficulty menu popping open again when you press an arrow key after picking a level.
  • Keeps boards you play from the keyboard listening after Undo, Hint or a new puzzle, so in games like Akari, Hitori, Pipes, Nonograms and Unblock the arrow keys carry on where you left off without another click on the board.
  • Fixes Space, Enter or an arrow key reopening a settings panel, the difficulty menu or the site search after a panel or an end-of-game window closed, whether you closed it with Esc or a click.
  • Fixes Queen Zones' keyboard play: the arrow keys now move a visible outline, and Space, Enter and X act on the outlined square instead of one you couldn't see. The board is a single stop for the Tab key now, too.
  • Fixes Mini Crossword holding on to the Tab key everywhere on the page. Tab still jumps to the next clue while you type in the grid, Shift+Tab goes back a clue, and Esc hands Tab back to the page.
  • Fixes full screen when you turn your phone: the board now re-fits the new screen instead of shrinking.
  • Fixes the page behind full screen scrolling under your mouse wheel, and Tab wandering off into it.
  • Fixes the numbers in the full-screen top bar slipping under the buttons on tablets, and the on-screen keyboard covering the bottom row of the board on short phones.
  • In Chrome and Edge, Esc in an open menu or window during full screen now closes just that, not the whole full screen.
  • In full screen, Esc in a puzzle, and in 2048, Spider Solitaire, FreeCell and Same Color, first does the game's own job (puts a piece back, drops a selection or the cards you picked up, cancels a swap, clears the letters you typed); press it again to leave full screen.
  • Pauses a running arcade game when you leave full screen with the Exit button, as Esc already did, so on a phone the run no longer carries on below the screen, and brings the board back into view as full screen closes.
  • Fixes leaving full screen starting a paused game again in Falling Blocks, Cube Dash, Sky Jumper, Hop Kingdom, Survivors, Starfall and Sling Monkey. Esc now only pauses; P resumes.
  • Adds the Swap button to Bubble Shooter's and Marble Shooter's full screen on phones, where there was no way to swap.
  • Makes the boards in Akari, Color Links, Hashiwokakero, Hex, Kakuro, Nurikabe and Slitherlink fill a tablet's screen in full screen.
  • Keeps the Hitori and Nurikabe boards still while their conflict message comes and goes.
  • Puts the keys back on Akari's board after the end window's New puzzle, so the arrow keys work without another click.
  • Shows Water Sort's "No hint available" message in full screen too.
  • Fixes Enter not pressing the button you've tabbed to in Letter Square and Emoji Quiz.
  • Keeps Same Color's board still in full screen when you pick a group, so the second tap clears it.
  • Fixes Space toggling the sound instead of firing pins in aa's full screen after the end-of-round window closed.
  • Fixes aa's pin numbers drifting away from their pins as the wheel turns.
  • Keeps Tab and Shift+Tab inside full screen after you click Start, Pause or Resume in the top bar.
  • Shows 2048's "+N" score flourish in full screen, where it used to float off the top of the screen.
  • Gives Falling Blocks' well the whole screen in full screen on a computer, where the keyboard plays, instead of sharing it with the touch pad, and shows the Hold and Next pieces beside it there on tablets and computers.
  • Gives buttons in Same Color, Color Links and Number Path names that start with what they say on them, for screen readers and voice control (Same Color's New board was called New game).
  • Fixes Spider Solitaire's felt stopping short of the right edge on phones.
  • Fixes Esc not putting back a Block Fit piece you picked with the mouse.

5.13.0

Backgammon

Highlights

  • Adds Backgammon, the most requested game left on the list: the classic race against the computer with the full rules of a single game. Roll, tap a checker and a dot to move it, hit a lone checker to send it to the bar, bring everyone home and bear off first. Gammons and backgammons are called, Easy, Medium and Hard play with growing care (Hard rolls every one of your replies before it moves), Undo takes back a checker or your whole last turn, an unfinished game is saved on this device, and your win-loss record is kept for each level

5.12.0

Snake game modes, and a polish pass

Highlights

  • Snake has game modes: Borderless lets the snake pass through one edge and come back on the other, Walls drops a stone on the board for every apple you eat, and Portal puts out two linked apples — eat one and the snake comes out of the other
  • Each Snake mode keeps its own best score for every difficulty; the online top 10 still counts Classic runs
  • Snake's modes and board size are now picked from cards and a Settings panel, and the board's frame shows whether its edges are solid or open
  • Snake now waits for your first arrow, swipe or tap after Start, with arrows around its head showing where it can go, instead of setting off on its own
  • Word Guess, Quad Words and Phrase Guess now say why a guess was turned away — "Not enough letters", "Not in word list", or in hard mode the hint you missed, like "2nd letter must be A"
  • Solitaire now says why a move was refused instead of silently dropping your pick, and screen readers hear each card's name and pile
  • Nonograms: dragging paints one state along the line instead of flipping cells back and forth, a fill drag no longer wipes your crosses, and fingers can drag too. Arrow keys move around the board, Enter or Space marks, and X switches Fill / Cross
  • Memory Match keeps your best score for each board size and tells you when you beat it
  • Opening Settings in Wingbeat, Starfall, Cube Dash, Hop Kingdom and Sky Jumper now pauses the run, so nothing hits you behind the panel
  • Minesweeper keeps the 30-wide Hard board for wider screens, where its cells are big enough to tap
  • Puzzle clocks in Sudoku, Minesweeper, Nonograms, Kakuro, Akari, Nurikabe, Slitherlink, Hashiwokakero, Queen Zones, Mini Crossword, Memory Match, Number Path and Hex now stop while you're in another tab, like the rest of the puzzles already did
  • Recall, Number Memory and Color Sequence keep a Play again button on the board after a lost run
  • Word Ladder now celebrates a solved ladder, and Chimp Test, Recall and Color Sequence celebrate a new best like Number Memory does
  • On phones, the on-screen keyboard or number pad in Word Guess, Quad Words, Phrase Guess, Cryptogram, Hangman, Word Ladder, Emoji Quiz, Sudoku, Kakuro, Calcudoku and Number Memory now stays at the bottom of the screen, so you can play without scrolling down to the keys

Fixes

  • Fixes Sudoku leaving cells red after you erased the digit they clashed with, or a hint replaced it
  • Fixes Memory Match starting the clock on an empty board when you restarted during the memorise preview
  • Fixes Chimp Test leaving no way to start again after closing the end-of-run window
  • Fixes the arrow keys and Space being held by Falling Blocks, Starfall, Cube Dash, Hop Kingdom and Sling Monkey before a game started, so the page couldn't scroll by keyboard
  • Fixes Enter or Space on a focused button restarting Falling Blocks, Wingbeat or Starfall instead of pressing the button
  • Brick Breaker now pauses when you switch tabs, so coming back doesn't cost a life
  • Cube Dash locks the track picker mid-run, so a stray tap can't throw a run away
  • Starfall's header shows the run you're flying, not the setup waiting for your next one, and its screen-shake and hitbox toggles apply straight away
  • Sudoku, Minesweeper, Mini Crossword and Memory Match boards no longer redraw every cell each frame while the clock runs
  • Fixes a physical Enter in Word Guess typing the last on-screen letter you tapped onto the next row, and Enter on a button you reached with Tab in Quad Words or Phrase Guess submitting a guess instead of pressing it
  • Fixes Marble Shooter starting a new game when you pressed Space to scroll the page after a game, and Survivors, Marble Shooter and Kakuro holding the arrow keys outside a game
  • Fixes Enter on a focused button restarting Four in a Row or Snake, and a clicked Word Groups tile toggling again on Enter
  • Opening Settings in Brick Breaker and Survivors now pauses the run too
  • Kakuro, Star Battle, Sun and Moon and Queen Zones explain how to play in the same words on the board, in the how-it-works steps and in the FAQ
