About the gameHow Tents and Trees works,
How Tents and Trees works,
in short.
- Step 011121130201
Trees and edge clues.
Trees are placed on the grid; the numbers along the top and left edges say exactly how many tents belong in each column and row.
- Step 021121130201
Pair every tree with one tent.
Tap to cycle each empty cell Empty → Tent → Grass. Every tree gets exactly one tent, and every tent must sit directly above, below, or beside the tree it belongs to. Grass is just a marker for cells you have ruled out.
- Step 031121130201
No two tents touching.
Tents may never touch each other — not edge to edge, not even at a corner. The board is solved when every tree has its tent, the row and column counts are met, and no two tents share a side or a corner.
Questions
Tents and Trees questions, answered.
Tents and Trees is a deduction puzzle on a square grid. Trees are placed for you. Your job is to add tents around them so that the numbers along each row and column match, every tree pairs with exactly one tent, and no two tents touch each other — not even diagonally.
Tap an empty cell to place a tent. Tap again to mark it as grass (a note that no tent goes there). A third tap clears it. The numbers above each column and beside each row tell you how many tents that line contains in the final solution. Solve by deduction alone — no guessing is ever required.
Every tree must be paired with exactly one tent that sits directly above, below, left, or right of it (orthogonally adjacent, never diagonal). Every tent must be paired with exactly one tree the same way. A tree may have several candidate tents in the puzzle but only one pairing in the final solution.
It's one of the three core rules: no two tents may sit in cells that share an edge or a corner. That single rule does most of the work — once you place a tent, the eight cells around it can be ruled out, and the puzzle propagates from there.
Each number tells you how many tents end up in that row or column once the puzzle is solved. The label turns moss-green when the count is exact and clay-red if you have placed too many tents in a line.
Hint reveals one cell of the solved board — either a tent you missed or a grass marker on a cell that should stay empty. It does not penalise your time, but it bumps the hint counter shown at the end. Reach for it sparingly when a chain of deductions stalls.
Three levels: Easy is 7×7 with seven pairs, Medium is 9×9 with twelve, Hard is 11×11 with eighteen. Larger grids have more interacting constraints, so the deductions chain further before each tent locks in.
Yes. The generator verifies uniqueness at creation time by counting valid tent placements; any puzzle with more than one valid layout is rejected. You should always be able to reach the answer by reasoning, never by guesswork.
Yes. The board scales to the screen and a single tap cycles each cell through empty, tent, and grass. Difficulty and hint controls live on the same toolbar across all screen sizes.
